Emmy Recap

Yesterday and all day today, every time I scroll Instagram, E! shares another photo from Monday’s 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. So I thought, I’ll write a recap, and here we are.

What I learned from watching the Emmys is that I clearly don’t watch as much TV as I thought I did … or I just don’t watch what is important. I was so beyond bored as I sat through all the Comedy and Limited Series awards. I don’t watch a single one of those shows. I get my comedy from Real Housewives and a Parks & Recs Netflix binge … the only limited series I watched this year was Waco, which I saw was nominated like once and lost.

Soooooo, what I’m getting at is … you were looking for my thoughts on the first two hours of awards?

Image result for I have none gif

One thing we can discuss? Fashion!! Some of my favorite looks included Emilia Clarke, Sandra Oh, and Ellie Kemper.Image result for emilia clarke emmys 2018Image result for sandra oh emmysImage result for ellie kemper emmys 2018

My favorite couple looks were ScarJo & Colin … and obviously Jessica & Justin! Which, now that I see them side by side, maybe they were my favs because they were so similar??

Image result for scarlett johansson and colin jost emmys      Image result for justin and jessica emmys

As for bad fashion? I was NOT here for Regina King as a highlighter, Tracee Ellis Ross as a teen girl’s comforter, or Chrissy Ty-ginn’s high neck chain gang look. Not posting pics because they were truly heinous (name that movie!).

Side bar: Why did I spell CT’s name like that? Haven’t you heard?? We’ve been saying it wrong all these years … along with Ariana Grande’s name! Plus, Burt and Ernie are gay together, and Kylie Jenner just tried milk in her cereal for the first time … LIKE, WHAT IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN AND THE BULLS*** THAT MAKES THE NEWS?! That I then must report on …      Image result for side smile gif

Moving on … I don’t know if it was the wine I was drinking, but I thought Colin and Michael were really funny, although some jokes and skits didn’t land (especially Maya Rudolph & Fred Armisen). In fact, much of the show felt like SNL skits … but honestly, I didn’t mind because I love Saturday Night Live. Clearly I have good taste because it won it’s 65th Emmy during the award show (at least, google said it was the show’s 65th award).

Image result for snl gif

It wasn’t until about two & a half hours in that I started getting excited. That was about the time Darren Criss won for American Crime Story and John Mulaney won for his stand-up! And if those two awards didn’t wake you up …… did the unexpected proposal??? You can read the whole story here! As cynical as I usually am, I thought it was super sweet!

Finally, just as I was about to turn the show off, I started to hear Game of Thrones, Westworld, This is Us, and The Crown. My category has arrived!

Image result for drama

Seriously, I was like a proud momma seeing Peter Dinklage, Thandie Newton, and Claire Foy win! Then … Game of Thrones taking Best Drama Series?!

Image result for who saw that coming gif

I mean, I hoped, but you don’t take over a year, almost two, off and still win do you? YOU DO! I’m currently reading the second book in the series in prep for 2019 and just so I still have some GOT in my life (I also play the theme at any jukebox bar I can find!). Bend the knee, it’s still the best on TV!

Image result for there you have it

I live tweeted the show; always go check me out on Twitter (find links when you scroll alllllll the way to the bottom of the blog –> IG is there too!). On deck this week is #RHOC & #RHOD, plus the hubs and I started watching Mayans M.C., the Sons spin off, and I plan to watch Sierra Burgess soon too! Happy reading, happy watching, happy discussing all the ridiculousness pop culture offers us!

Labor Day Re-Watch

This year I choose to not labor by going back and analyzing some of my favorite TV time of the last two weeks: the Real Housewives of New York reunion parts 1 & 2, and the incredible Netflix movie To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (which probably deserves an entire post of it’s own, but here we are).

Image result for to all the boys i've loved before gif

Let’s go ahead and start with Peter and Lara Jean, that way if you’re only here for them (I see you Peterson girls!) you can stop reading when the housewives roll in!

Background

I’m not trying to sound all braggy, but I have been obsessed with Peter and Lara Jean’s story waaay before the movie ever came out. I read To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved BeforeP.S. I Still Love You years ago, and then reread them before starting the movie. I’m currently reading the conclusion to the series, Always and Forever, Lara Jean.  I hate to be that person who is all “The books are better” but come on, they always are, and I’ll get to why in a little bit. But first, everything I loved …

Film’s Successes

Image result for to all the boys i've loved before gif

The worst thing a movie based off a successful novel can do is cast actors who are not even close to the characters. Whoever cast this film deserves an award because the actors are the people from the book. Peter, Lara Jean, Kitty, Margo, Chris, and the dad are exactly how I pictured they would be … like to a T! I love how awkward, yet endearing LJ is … I think Peter uses the term “quirky” in the books. I love how she’s an individual (the whole “better style” scene is great!), and unsure of herself, but then sure with Peter, but then pretends with him, but then ends up falling for him. Oh, and Peter! Where do I begin? His encounter with her on the track, then wanting an explanation at the diner, to being kind to Kitty, to their interaction at the party, to his realization he can talk to her about super personal issues, to the moment he tells her she was never second best, to him admitting he is in love with her in the end! His little scrunched nose and the way he grabs her is exactly how Jenny Han wrote him.

I could go on and on about how great the two of them are, both on their own and together, but I really think you should read the books. Lara Jean and Peter’s story is one for the ages, one Lara Jean could only dream of reading about, and lucky for us we actually get to!

My Only Criticisms

Warning** spoilers for those who haven’t read the books … and if you haven’t, what the heck are you doing?! (Haven’t I already mentioned this??)

Image result for to all the boys i've loved before gif

So, in the books the hot tub video isn’t released until the second installment and only because the first book has to fit in all the drama with Josh; he kisses LJ! And, Peter shows up to confront the two of them at Thanksgiving and Josh and Peter almost fight; it’s epic! So I was a little disappointed that was left out of the movie. Also, Peter knew Gen released the video in the book and keeps it from LJ for a while, and that is the main plot of the second book. However, most people who are fans of the books know that the movie has to be condensed down, so this isn’t a huge critique.

I’ve heard a few other fans say the fact that Lara Jean goes into the hot tub in her nightgown was stupid; I thought it was kind of sexy of her (ugh & that leg wrap!) However, it was really dumb that she was able to dry off so fast and then sleep in the gross hot tub nightgown.

Really though, if those are my only complaints, then I actually don’t have any at all. This movie 100% did the books justice, hopefully encourages more people to read, and is the most epic love story, the new Jack & Rose, Noah & Allie of our generation!

Switching Gears …

I just want to quickly recap the RHONY reunion (both parts) for a second time. Click here for my post on part 1: RHONY: Part 1 Reunion. I didn’t blog part 2 (but I tweeted; follow me!) The reason I’m bringing it up now is because I felt so much happened I needed to re-watch and vent before Wednesday’s conclusion; Labor Day was the perfect day to do so!

Image result for real housewives of new york season 10 gif

A few thoughts ….

  • I seriously can not get over the reactions the women had while watching clips of Nutcrackergate, along with all the other digs Carole, Dorinda, & Ramona were making (at Bethenny). I can’t even imagine where the show can go from here based on the women’s current relationships; they’re all over the place, how will they even film together?
  • I’m so so so happy Sonja stuck up for Bethenny and she couldn’t have made better remarks!
  • I feel like the fact that everyone was so up in arms regarding the Nutcracker was ridiculous (bringing it up again; ugh sorry!); why do you care if B’s thank you was on camera or not; it’s just one more thing to harp on Bethenny about and it’s so so so dumb!
  • Ramona went off on her little rant to Bethenny because at the end of the day, she strongly wishes she could be Bethenny’s bff
  • Dorinda is insanely defensive regarding the Luann conflict in Columbia … telling Sonja she’s drunk all the time? Uh, no. Also, if you’re (Dorinda) going to get that upset about Lu’s “Here she goes” comment or whatever it was … it’s because there is probably truth in it. Dorinda would not have got that upset unless it was true that she was getting started on the wasty express.
  • We need a sit down with Lu in the Clubhouse. Stat!
  • Ramona’s face during the Lu arrest video ….
  • I didn’t realize the “Carole doesn’t have a career” comment was made during the season and I think Carole is really holding on to that.
  • It seems like Carole is upset about anything and everything Bethenny said about her, when in fact all the women talk about each other in their interviews; maybe Carole is more sensitive because Bethenny was her close friend … ??
  • AGE SHAMING IS NOT A THING!
  • Eeek… the resume into the current decade comment was a little harsh.
  • In the end, Carole wants to be the HBIC and if you’re B’s friend you will never ever ever get to be that; stop being so cool Carole.
  • Omg they’re like really yelling, Carole is really yelling.

Image result for real housewives of new york season 10 reunion

In the end, part three is going to epic and Carole has some nerve for asking Andy is he’s scared of Bethenny. Get excited for Wednesday!

Image result for real housewives of new york season 10 reunion

To close, I hope you all had a great last weekend before the fall season starts. While it may have been Carole’s last great summer, we can all sleep kindly knowing there are Peter Kivinksys in the world to take care of us, and that Pumpkin Spice Lattes are around the corner! Cheers to a great week!!

Movie of the Week: Netflix’s Set It Up

Netflix has been slaying the game lately with original content! There are the obvious choices like The Crown, Stranger Things & Unbreakable! Kimmy Schmidt. There there are the thrilling true-crime documentaries such as Making a Murderer, Evil Genius, & The Staircase. But, even their original movies have been successful, especially the spring and summer releases such as The Kissing Booth, Ibiza, Set It Up (which we’ll be discussing today).

If you didn’t catch our “Movie of the Week” post from The Kissing Booth, no worries! You can click right there —>  Movie of the Week: Netflix’s The Kissing Booth … I’m only bringing it up because a) it’s both a great movie & a great read and b) this post will be written in a similar fashion  Image result for smile emoji gif  Enjoy!!

40 Thoughts I had during the movie Set It Up:

  1. I could NOT be more excited for Glen Powell! I LOVED him in Scream Queens and Hidden Figures.
  2. I could NOT be more excited for Zoey Deutch! I LOVED her in Why Him?
  3. I could NOT be more excited for Taye Diggs. I LOVE him in everything, mainly Empire of recent.
  4. Meh, minimal excitement for Lucy Liu.
  5.   Warning … Spoilers ahead!

  6. I always love a good montage opening!
  7. Am I going to like this? I kind of feel it’s just the second coming of The Devil Wears Prada.

Image result for devil wears prada gif

  8. Ohhhh Glen Powell has a girlfriend? Isn’t he going to date Zoey Deutch by the end of the movie?
  9. “But we’re not old enough to get married …” hahaha I kind of felt the same way when I got engaged.
  10. Oh snap did I know Pete Davidson was in this? And he’s gay in the movie? He’s super trendy right now #pariana

Image result for pete davidson gif

  11. Was Pete Davidson’s hookup Cody from Big Brother??? Someone @ me … I’m too lazy to rewind.
  12. TITUS ANDROMEDON!!!!!!!!!!!

Image result for titus andromedon gif

  13. Omg the elevator scene hahaha!
  14. The Kiss Cam wouldn’t go that long … but I’ll buy it for the movie.
  15. Glen’s girlfriend … Suess? Whatever her name is, I don’t like this story line … get with Zoey already!
  16. Lucy Liu just screamed, “THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT!” and my dogs started barking bahaha    Image result for giggle emoji gif

Image result for set it up lucy liu

  17. I never had a salamander …
  18. Drunk Taye Diggs is great!
  19. Pete Davidson and Zoey Deutch as friends are great!
  20. Okay. Engagement party. The start of the Glenn & Zoey falling in love!

Image result for netflix set it up

  21. I don’t know if he’s supposed to be joking with his dancing … but Glen Powell out on the dance floor is doing all of my exact moves!
  22. The bosses are getting engaged! Zoey gets to write! Glen gets a promotion! All is well!
  23. Oh noooo … Lucy Liu is actually a good person and Taye Diggs sucks; he’s going to break her heart!
  24. Every single rom com moment where everything gets ruined … and now it’s happened! Let’s see how it magically gets fixed in the end.
  25. “You’re not hard to get; you’re hard to earn.” awww all is right in the rom com world again!

Image result for set it up netflix glen powell and zoey deutch
Overall, I’d give it a 3/5 … maybe even a 3.5. I would have liked to see Lucy Liu end up with someone in the end, but I can appreciate the whole “She’s a strong woman who doesn’t need a man” idea, but it’s like, she’s already established and successful in her career, why can’t she have a good dude by her side too? Anyway, worth a watch with a girlfriend, some pizza, and a bottle of Rosé!

Until next time friends!

Movie of the Week: Netflix’s The Kissing Booth

Movie of the week is back!

Image result for film gif

My girl, Claudia Oshry Soffer, brought up the movie The Kissing Booth on her morning show, The Morning Toast. Then her sister, Jackie Oshry, watched it and the two of them couldn’t stop discussing it. So, like a good fan, I decided it would be the first movie of summer vacation! Here we go… !!!

Image result for the kissing booth gif

40 Thoughts I had during the movie The Kissing Booth:

  1. Molly Ringwald is in this? It’s already good!
  2. Our main characters are Elle … and Lee?
  3. Male and female best friendships can be tricky …
  4. Is Elle the girl from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? (I later learned, no)
  5. Cute opening
  6.  Warning …. Spoilers ahead!

  7. Yeah, Noah Flynn, IS STUPID HOT!
  8. How far apart are Noah & Lee?
  9. Uhhh …Lee has a really nice car!
  10. Cringggggging at the short skirt scene!
  11. Why didn’t she just tie something around her waist or wear tights? And really, you wear school uniforms every day & only have two pairs of pants?!?!
  12. Ohhhh … Flynn just called Elle his “little sister” #ouch
  13. Oh, but these girls’ skirts aren’t too short?!
  14. Lee could be way better looking if he cut (or at least styled) his hair.
  15. Detention Scene —>   Image result for hysterical laughing gif
  16. Elle’s first date … oh something bad is going to happen, isn’t it?
  17. Yep.
  18. Claudia was right about this being a Disney type film, but a bit on the raunchy side too. I appreciate it. Screenshot 2018-05-24 at 2.04.23 PM.png
  19. Do schools really allow kissing booths? Out of every cheesy moment in the film, this may be the one I don’t believe the most …
  20. Image result for kissing booth gif
  21. Oh no, she’s going to get first time drunk … is this going to be bad?
  22. Wait, why isn’t Lee helping her?! And stopping people from taking pictures of her?!
  23. Curtain Scene —>  Image result for hysterical laughing gif
  24. Sooo… the best friends do or do not like like one another?
  25. Scratch # 19, the boys’ locker room scene is the one I don’t believe would actually happen!
    Screenshot 2018-05-24 at 5.24.38 PM
  26. Umm the girl who wants to kiss Lee is so cute!!! Do they end up together?
  27. STOP TALKING ELLE!Image result for kissing booth netflix
  28. Of course it’s pouring down rain and they run into a gazebo and kiss again!
  29. He seems massively tall compared to her … random thought.
  30. Sooo … Noah has a car & a motorcycle?!
  31. He better really like her —>   Image result for knuckle sandwich gif
  32. They’re totes cute and all, but I feel really bad when the brother finds out; we all know it’s going to happen!
  33. OH NO THINGS ARE GOING TO GET RUINED; I HAVE A MAJOR PIT!
  34. Now we’re in the moment in every rom com where all the characters are mad at one another and life seems hopeless. Screenshot 2018-05-24 at 3.04.01 PM
  35. Of course Dance Dance Revolution is what brings them back together (is it still called that?)
  36. Awww her sweet dad! Image result for heart gif
  37. Their prom is so cute!
  38. Both Lee and Noah Flynn need haircuts!
  39. What exactly is Elle supposed to be at her costume party?
  40. Ohhh the ol’ switcheroo and Noah is in the car with her!
  41. She got his bike in the end! Ya girl!

Image result for the kissing booth netflix

Overall, I’d give the movie 4/5 stars. The cheese level is extreme, but if you’re a fan of romantic comedies, you’ll enjoy it. The bonus scenes at the end were cute. But, the best part of the whole thing …

Elle & Noah are dating in real life!

Jackie Kennedy Trash Talks & Princess Margaret Weds Filth: The Crown Season 2

Why are more people not talking about this show?

And when talking about the show, one must use the phrase “one” and then a verb because that’s how Elizabeth talks and one must keep it classy here at MHH!

Image result for the crown season 2 gif

I mean honestly, if more of you knew the tea spilled in this show about a real life Royal family, the sound of jaws hitting the floor would be deafening.  Here is a tiny list: Elizabeth & Philip’s shaky marriage, Elizabeth’s uncle’s (the former king) suspicious relationship with Hitler, the former Prime Minister’s serious drug problem, and the many partners of Princess Margaret’s husband. Not to mention the horrible things Jackie Kennedy said about the Queen!

Image result for jackie kennedy and the queen

Now, one is also a 29 year old basic B, who drinks wine while watching the show for entertainment purposes, not a history lesson. While one may have googled each episode to see what was actually true and what wasn’t, please keep in mind during this post, I’ll probs spout fallacies (shout out to Jackie O & GWNJ for that new catch phrase!). Again, remember as you read, one is not a freaking historian.

Image result for the crown netflix setting

The first thing one must comment on about the show is how beautiful each scene is. Seriously one would love to spend the night in the palace, but more so than that, one would love to just be transported back to London in the 1950’s. But one is not here to discuss beauty, one is here to spill tea (ah! Tea! England; just realized! I looooove it!!), so let’s begin!

Did you know…

Elizabeth & Philip didn’t have the strongest of marriages.

Image result for the crown season 2 gif

Philip felt second fiddle to Elizabeth so in the first few episodes of the season, he’s sent off to travel the world and visit countries in the name of England. Add in a ballerina and a horrible private secretary (I think one calls them assistants in America) and one is left to wonder if Philip and Elizabeth will make it out together at the end of the season. Never fear though; it all comes to a head in the season finale.

Princess Margaret married a … ahem … ummm … well … a cheat.

Image result for the crown season 2 gif

After Margaret’s heartbreak in the first season, one can’t imagine it getting much worse for her. But then Marg marries this horrible photographer who … how do I say this … has a wandering eye (and acts on it). One doesn’t even know why he decides to marry Margaret (to please his mother?) because, to quote the show, “the narrow path is not to his taste.” (seriously, he sleeps with a married couple, as in BOTH people!)

Image result for princess margaret and antony armstrong-jones

One researched this heavily and a majority of it’s true! Not only that, but Marg and Tony had two children together, fought constantly, stepped outside their marriage (actually I’m not fully sure Margaret did), and sadly (well maybe not sadly) got divorced. One thought this would be the only scandalously event during the time for the family; one would be wrong. Ugh, and POOR MARGARET after the whole Peter Townsend disaster.

Prime Minister Eden (who followed Churchill) had a drug problem & embarrassed the country.

Image result for anthony eden the crown

Ah yes, you see Prime Minister Eden there from the show, so high he passed out (this scene actually ends the final episode of the first season if one remembers correctly). One understands that drugs during this time were not administered in the same way they are today, plus doctors weren’t fully aware of the effects (especially addictive effects) those drugs could have. So I guess Eden gets a pass for being an addict …? However, he does not get a pass on the Suez Crisis. Google it.

Elizabeth’s uncle Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne, may also have conspired with Hitler.

Image result for king edward gif the crown

Edward just caused mad drama for this family. He abdicated (or gave up) the role as king in order to marry some crazy American (they couldn’t marry because she was a divorcee; the scandal!!). THEN it comes out later in the season Edward had met with Hitler and exchanged letters with Nazi soldiers. The show even displays pictures of this at the end of the episode (2×6). If you don’t believe me, again, I say, google it.

t-adolf-hitler-duke-and-duchess-of-windsor.jpg

Jackie Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth had a Real Housewife moment.

Image result for jackie kennedy and the queen the crown

So this interaction is a little more wishy-washy when trying to find the truth in it. Yes, Jackie & Jack came to Buckingham Palace for dinner. Yes, Jackie returned for another visit several months later. Did the Queen give Jackie a personal tour o f the palace? IDK. Did they cuddle puppies together? IDK. Did Jackie shade the Queen? IDK. Did Jackie return to apologize because of that shade? IDK. Did Jackie admit her and Jack did drugs together?!?!?!?!?!?!? I kind of hope so because that. would. be. nuts! Listen, scandal followed the Kennedys their whole public lives, and as one is learning, it followed the Windsors as well, so clearly there had to be some sort of drama when the two families met.

Prince Philip had a horrible childhood and may have taken it out on Charles.

Image result for prince philip the crown gif

First, one must admit how much of a pansy Charles was and how much he still sucks as a person. Which probs let Philip to be so hard on him; Charles just sucked at life and Philip wanted him to be better.

Prince Philip obviously wanted better for himself too: he attending this awful school, his closest sister was married to a Nazi, and then she died in a plane crash, leaving Philip to march behind her casket, in Germany, surrounded by Hitler loyalists. Whether or not Philip built an entire stone wall at school by himself after his sister’s death is true (2×9 — a very emotional scene), one comes to understand why Philip wanted his own son (Charles) to be tough.

But, one thinks Charles just had too big of ears and was doomed to be an awful person not matter what Philip tried to instill in him.

prince-charles-childhood-ss05.jpg

Well, here is the end of your history lesson for today. Next up to watch is a documentary titled The Royal House of Windsor, that one assumes would explain truth behind the family, history, and events The Crown has presented. So maybe some of the tea split today will later be found out untrue, but it’s much more fun believing the award winning show, right?

A Christmas Cruise or A Christmas Prince?

Two things before we begin…

One, here’s hoping I get my shit together in 2018 because my Christmas post is arriving the day after ChristmasSheesh! I blame it on the fact that the holidays are crazy, plus both my husband and I have divorced parents, leading us to Reese Witherspoon & Vince Vaughn it up …

Image result for four christmases gif

But, better a Christmas post late, than never!

Second, My Hollywood Hangover made it to fifty posts! Can you believe it?! Number fifty will be last post of the year, but we’ll be back in 2018 with more juicy gossip, thoughts, and feelings about all things pop culture! I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all my family, friends (old & new), and followers of my blog. Watching television and movies has been much more enjoyable knowing I could share my thoughts with strangers! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and has a beautiful new year!

Image result for happy new year gif

Now let’s get to it!

Is there a Christmas romance you find believable and warms you to the core? When I say “warms you to the core” I’m talking Titanic “I’ll never let go Jack” or The Notebook “if you’re a bird then I’m a bird” type love story. I figured with Hallmark, ION, and Lifetime having an unlimited amount of Christmas romances, I’d try a few out!

christmas-tree-couple.jpg

I really had no idea what to choose to watch so I decided on A Christmas Cruise because Nick who is so VILE was making his acting debut, and then A Christmas Prince because of all the hype it was getting on social media.

dims

christmas-prince-fb

A Christmas Cruise

Premise: Vivica A. Fox is a writer with a young editor for a boss. He wants her to write a sexy and unique story, and if she does, she gets to be a senior editor or some shit like that. Because she’s single, her friend signs her up for … wait for it … a cruise to CHRISTMAS ISLAND! Yes, that’s the name of the island, plus the whole ship and experience is Christmas themed.

Image result for hysterical laughing gif

Anyway, Vivica thinks she can get her story on the trip so she goes. And meets/falls in love with the cruise director (see below). What is really annoying about this cruise director was how many times he reminds Vivica that he can’t fraternize with the guests, yet the last third of the movie he spends fraternizing with her and her friend (who also meets a love on the cruse). Oh, AND cruise director asks V to quit her job and write novels on the ship while he works (uhh how long have you known each other?)!

AChristmasCruise-4.jpg

Second annoying aspect of the film … NICK VIALL IS ONLY IN IT TWICE! He is on the freaking movie poster; what an advertising scheme! He has one line where he gives the cruise director love advice (yeah because he’s a real expert there!) and you’re supposed to believe their best friends even though Viall Vile is in the movie twice with two total lines!

Image result for a christmas cruise movie

The only part that didn’t annoy me out of the whole film is when Vivica gives advice to a engaged 29 year old on the cruise. In the end, V gets her dream editing job but misses the cruise director, so he ends up leaving his job to come find her because the guy needs to chase after the girl not the other way around and is there always caroling at the end of these cheeseball Christmas movies?

On the cheese scale, A Christmas Cruise gets an A and on the believability scale, it gets a D.

Worst line of the film: “I want to be my own captain …”
“And I want to be your first mate!”

A Christmas Prince

This had to be the Christmas romance of the year and it wasn’t even Hallmark produced! The movie got so much hype (in my eyes thanks to the Harry, Meghan, and the promotion team at Netflix), that I had to watch it.

Image result for a christmas prince

Premise: Young writer (again with the writers .. let’s find our characters a different profession … or can females only fall in love when they’re trying to write a story to further their careers … ohh but I bet they leave their careers  in the end when they do actually fall in love!) pretends to tutor a princess to gain access and find the scoop on the heir to the throne (the princess’s brother). Drama ensues, but low and behold, in the end the prince and the lowly American writer who only wears Chuck Taylors fall in love.

Image result for roll eyes gif

A few questions I have about this movie: Why does the queen never wear a crown? And how come no one ever sees Amber (our heroine writer) on her cellphone capturing pictures inside the palace? Why is the acting so bad? See more unanswered questions here!

Image result for a christmas prince characters

However, I didn’t completely hate the movie. I really enjoyed the little sister princess who Amber must tutor. She’s my favorite character. I also really liked how the prince has to save Amber from wolves out in the forest JUST LIKE THE BEAST SAVES BELLE FROM WOLVES! There are also more twists than I expected in the movie, but alas Amber’s identity is revealed by two sinister characters out to steal the throne, but as you guessed it, all works out in the end.

Image result for a christmas prince characters

(You can find many more witty tweets about this movie; seriously just hashtag it!)

On the cheese scale, A Christmas Prince gets an C and on the believability scale, it gets a F, however the movie does get an A+ on the ability to be swept into it more so than a cruise to somewhere called Christmas Island.

Worst line of the film: “Where there’s a tiara, there’s dirt. Trust me.”

Did you watch either film this Holiday season?

Lady Gaga sang all her hits, plus many songs off the Joanne album! She had four different stages and mini-bridges that would drop from the ceiling so she could get from the front of the arena to the near back. She sang EVERYTHING live and sounded AMAZING! She was honest and real and open, speaking about meaning behind her songs. At one point, when she was describing the song “Joanne” and discussing loved ones and lost, the girl next to me started crying. REAL EMOTION WAS SHED AT THIS SHOW FRIENDS! Oh my gosh, and the people watching … !!

However, I’m not here with this post to brag that I got to see Lady Gaga in concert and you didn’t. (Maybe a little.) Mostly, I want to discuss her Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, which I saved to watch until after we went to see her (hence why the doc has been out since September and I’m just now covering it).

Heeeeeeeeere we go (a-yo a-yo ..get it?)!

“All my insecurities are gone, I don’t feel insecure about who am I as a woman. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of what I have.”

“…when they wanted me to be sexy or they wanted me to be pop I always put some fucking absurd spin on it that made me feel like I was still in control …”

“If I’m gonna be sexy at the VMAs singing about the paparazzi I’m gonna do it while cleaning the bathroom and reminding you of what fame did to Marilyn Monroe.”

“I want to do the opposite of what everyone thinks I’m going to do …”

“Everyone thinks I’m going to come out there on a fucking throne in a meat dress with 90 shirtless men and unicorns. Am I right? And then at the end I’m gonna do something shocking that’s gonna freak everybody out. But it’s not even in the neighborhood of what we’re gonna do.”

“Honestly we’ve seen me fucking glamorous for 10 years; it’s fucking boring.”

“I never felt comfortable enough to sing or wear my hair back; I never felt pretty enough or smart enough or a good enough musician. That’s the good part: I didn’t feel good enough, and I do now. Of all the things I deserve, that’s where I know I’m worth something.”

Joanne

Gaga’s Joanne album is one of my all-time favorite records, not favorite Gaga, favorite of ALL time. I love every single song and had no idea a majority of this doc was a behind the scenes of the album’s birth: like, did you know she is the one playing the piano on “A Million Reasons” (while she also drank white wine #mygirl!)? There are also scenes with her and Florence Welch singing their duet from the album (or when Flo teases Gaga about her millions of social media followers!), intimate scenes with her, her dad, and grandmother where she shares her inspiration for not only “Joanne” as a song, but the entire album. Of the album she said, “I’m going to fight like fucking hell for them to love this because it’s fucking loveable!” OMG and the scene when she goes to Wal-Mart to purchase her own album …

Hip Pain

So I knew Gaga had cancelled some shows on her tour this year due to immense pain, but I honestly had no idea what that fully meant. She holds none of it back when sharing it and I legit felt that pain. “I have chased this pain for five years,” she explains. “When I feel the adrenaline from my fans, I can fucking go. But it’s not like I’m not in pain.” The documentary shows Gaga bawling the day she is to sing for Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday due to hip pain, screaming into a pillow while her hip gets adjusted during a Super Bowl rehearsal, getting her makeup done while explaining to a doctor all the meds she has to take for the pain, and finally having a breakdown about possibly not being able to go through childbirth due to hip complications. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more real moment (or moments) from a celebrity.

Super Bowl 51

Humble. Diva. Perfectionist. “Why is there a football game before the Lady Gaga show?” What word would you pick to describe the scenes involving Gaga and SB51? I pick the first and last. Early on you hear her repeating the words”thank you” as being chosen, plus she goes on to discuss the importance of the performance and how she thinks “it can’t get bigger than the Super Bowl.” But, we also see her being a bit demanding during the rehearsals. BECAUSE SHE’S A MOTHER F’ING PERFECTIONIST AND TRUE ARTIST!

“If I pick up the keytar and play the wrong note in front of 100 million people, that’s my fault,” she says. “It doesn’t matter that someone else screwed it up. It’s my name. I know to other people it’s just the lining of a jacket,” she explains. “But for me, it’s the way that the fabric on my outfit interacts with this fabric is going to change the speed of my arm as it enters the sleeve.”

She didn’t disappoint.

Especially after seeing her live, I understand how each movement, breath, and note has to be calculated to make any performance the absolute best it can be. So if Gaga has to become a bit of a diva so the lining of the jacket helps her nail a performance, then gosh darn it FIX THE FREAKING LINING!

Final Thoughts

  • The parts where Gaga discusses her success intermixed with her failed relationships broke my heart; GAGA DESERVES LOVE
  • I was really shocked she smoked so much (just being a singer and all)
  • HOLY GAGA BOOBS at one point –> out by the pool, yeah, they were legit out
  • The slowed down, piano version of “Bad Romance” —— definiton of insanity!
  • SAY IT TO HER FACE MADONNA!
  • “I’m 30; I’m old to them” ugh girl me too!

Lastly…

In the doc, Lady Gaga describes her current style as black tees and jeans, yet worries fans will miss her outlandish style choices. Well this fan doesn’t miss it; this fan loves, adores, looks up to, and is inspired by this stripped down, real, emotional, open Lady Gaga. And I’m with her for years to come!

Movie of the Week #5: Bridget Jones has a baby (and a new face!)

To my hundreds of thousands of followers, I apologize for not completing Bridget’s story sooner. But we traveled to Oklahoma City two weeks ago and this past weekend was my birthday, so I just haven’t had time to see how things end for our girl.

busy

Bridget Jones’s Baby was released in September of 2016 and stars Renee Zellweger, Patrick Dempsey, and Colin Firth. Bridget is still the same, fun loving diary keeper, until she has a back-to-back one night stand with two different men …. and gets pregnant. Oh, and neither man she sleeps with is Hugh Grant because in the opening you find out he died.

lol.jpg

Ugh, I never in my life thought I would have to choose between Colin Firth and McDreamy! Bridge, why are you doing this to me?? (Also, we won’t talk about the elephant in the room that is Renee Zellweger’s face right? We just pretend we don’t notice the HUGE difference?).

We’re going to just let the cat out of the bag right away: the baby is Mark’s even though the movie leads to you believe it’s McDreamy’s. Omg and McDreamy is SO McDreamy in this movie. His character is rich, funny, sweet, chivalrous, hot, and 97% compatible with Bridge according to this algorithm he invented.

mcdre   I’ll give you a moment to look at that picture right there.

While a new character was entered, one thing that has remained the same is that you’re always cheering for Bridget. I mean go girl: she shags on the 4th and then she shags another on the 11th and now she has two of the hottest men fighting over her to father her baby?

Plus you just always seem to want Bridget as a friend. Cue “Jump Around…”

Funniest moments of the movie: Bridget’s expired dolphin saving condoms, her (first) outfit at the music festival, the Ed Sheeran cameo, and the moment when she has to tell the two men she’s pregnant and doesn’t know who the father is.

Patrick Dempsey and Colin Firth are amazing in this film. As mentioned, I didn’t want to root against Darcy, but Patrick Dempsey’s character is so darn likable and genuine about everything in the film. Darcy is still as adorable and perfect as always, too. He tells Bridget he’s nervous the night they hook back up. There is also a really great scene between the two men where they lead the lamaze teacher to think Bridget is a surrogate and the two men are a couple having her baby.

dfdfdfdasfdsfds

I did wonder for a while throughout the movie why it didn’t mention the downfall of Bridget and Mark, but you finally find out (too long into the movie in my opinion). Also, once the men find out about each other and Bridget’s uncertainty on the paternity, why didn’t they just go get a test down right then and there? Seriously, they don’t swabbed until after the baby is born.

However, those are two minor details in a movie that is a perfect conclusion to a story about one of literature and film’s most beloved characters!

Cheers to Bridget!

I Went on a Summer Binge ….

with my tv!

dkjdkjdfkjdkjdfkjldsfkjdfskjladskl

I realize summer isn’t officially over until September 22 (according to a calendar), but since I’m officially back to school next week & have been setting up my classroom the past two weeks, summer is over for me. With that, I wanted to share the shows I binge-watched on my summer vacation, especially if you’re someone in search of something new to start before all the fall shows return!

dsdfsfsfsdfdsI had been dying to watch this show since I read the book by Liane Moriarty back in 2015. However, my husband & I are cheap and didn’t get HBO until just this month (for obs Game of Thrones reasons).  I think I may really struggle discussing this show because I don’t even have words for how amazing it is …

speeechless.png

The premise is that a murder takes place at a elementary fundraising event and you spend the entire series (and book) trying to figure out who died and who the killer is. The story revolves around three main women: Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shaliene Woodley), and Madeline (Reese Witherspoon). There are minor characters as well including the three women’s husbands, overbearing Renata (Laura Dean), and hippie Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz).

kkkkk

Big Little LiesHere is what I said on Goodreads about the book when I read it: “What a quick read! This book was insanely entertaining, many times humorous, and part tragic. I kept thinking, ‘Which character am I most like?’ Plus, for someone who can usually foresee endings, I was shocked here with the murder and the Saxon Banks reveal!”

This may be the first ever novel to film adaptation I’ve seen that barely changes the plot of the novel, plus perfectly casts each character (okay maybe The Outsiders is first but BLL is obviously second!). The series is completely taken over by Kidman, Woodley, & Witherspoon, not just because you may be cheering for their characters, but because they become the characters and you’re completely sucked into their world.

The series is only seven episodes, about 50 or so minutes long, so it’s quick to binge, plus it was nominated for eight Primetime Emmys! Last, the soundtrack to this show is UNBELIEVABLE! For some reason, Witherspoon’s first grade daughter (in the show) has amazing taste in music and the music really directs the storyline. If you have HBO, go watch Big Little Lies NOW! If you’ve watched it, let’s dissect.

RiverdaleI’ve already covered this show on the blog (you can read it here!). However, two of my favorite podcasters @girlwithnojob & @JackieOProblems just watched and loved this series, plus I got one of my besties to binge (and love) it, thus making me want to include it on this list.
the crownI feel like I’ve been watching this show forever and I’m so glad I finally finished it! The Crown follows the current Queen of England starting with her father passing and then her starting her reign as queen (that’s Elizabeth II). This show won the Golden Globe for Best Television Drama in 2017, Claire Joy (who plays Elizabeth) won the Golden Globe for Best Actress TV Drama, and the show has an 8.8 rating on IMDb (which, if you follow that site, you know is amazing). The show is also nominated for 8 Primetime Emmys.

dfdhkjfsf

When I first started watching, I felt the show was extremely slow; usually I want to binge a show (like the two above) that surprises me each episode, keeps me coming back for more because there is unfinished business in the plot, or I need to know “who done it.” The Crown is not this. But, I’m fascinated with history and while watching, you learn so much. For example, did you know Winston Churchill hated a famous painting commissioned of himself around his 80th birthday, apparently leading his wife to burn it? Or, who knows about Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret’s whirlwind romance with Peter Townsend and all of the drama it caused the sisters?

fjdfdjklsf

Who knows exactly what is for sure true in the scripted series as the show alludes to marital problems between Elizabeth and Philip, Winston Churchill covering up a stroke (on top of being unpleasant), and Prime Minister Eden’s drug problem.

My favorite thing about the show though, is the feeling you get when watching, like I immediately want to be taken to England 1954 after I finish an episode. I’ve always been fascinated by the Royal Family (my husband still recalls when we were dating & I set an alarm in the middle of the night to see Kate & William wed) and this show has deepened that interest. It’s more than just the family; it’s the setting and scenes of the show. This show is shot beautifully! It’s no wonder because according to IMDb, the “series is Netflix’s second most expensive project.”

djfskfjdkslf.jpg

Vanity Fair wrote a great article on The Crown and it’s transition into Season 2 if you’re interested in reading more on it. I look forward to not taking as long to finish Season 2 when it’s finally out on Netflix!

If you’ve watched any of these three shows and have thoughts or opinions, hit me up on social media or leave a comment on this page! If you have any other binge-worthy suggestions, please share those as well!
