Movie of the Week: A Star is Born

“I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in…”

I realize this movie has been out for what seems like forever, and MHH had yet to review it. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I was going to because I had so many mixed emotions regarding the film. It took me a couple weeks to process what I watched, but I think I’m ready to discuss now!

The Good

1. Bradley Cooper’s acting.

I like Bradley Cooper as an actor, but I don’t think I like like him as an actor. I don’t run to the theater to see a Bradley Cooper film, but Star is Born may have changed that. Not only did I believe him as a singer (and don’t mind listening to him on the soundtrack), but I completely bought into the fact that he was a troubled addict. He made his character seem so sloppy and in constant need of a bath with that greasy hair. He absolutely committed to the part, brought pain to the story, and should without a doubt win all the awards for his role.

2. The music.

Whether you’re a fan of rock, country, or pop music there is something for you in this film. Whether you love “Born This Way” Gaga or Joanne Gaga, she’ll give you something in this film (I more prefer Joanne to be honest). Fun fact: if you didn’t know, many of those festival performances were real, including an actual Coachella performance. Don’t believe me? Click here to read about it!

My favorite Gaga solo songs included “Look What We’ve Found” and “Always Remember Us This Way;” oh! and if “I’ll Never Love Again” doesn’t win every Best Song category during award season, the whole system is SERIOUSLY DISTURBED! I loved all the Cooper/Gaga collabs too, including “Music to My Eyes,” “Diggin’ My Grave,” and OBVIOUSLY “Shallow.” Even if you don’t think the film will be your cup of tea, watch it just for the music!

The Not So Good

1. Lady Gaga as Ally

I don’t blame her acting and I’m not here to announce that she is a bad actress. This happens with some of my favorite actors/actresses and Lady Gaga falls into it. I simply could not suspend my disbelief with her while watching. I never bought into the Ally/ Jackson love story because I just kept seeing Lady Gaga next to Bradley Cooper. I did mention how great BC acted and yes, he became his character, but honestly I think he needed a different lead (albeit I have no idea who could have played the part … so maybe I should just shut up now).

2. Sadness

Warning ** spoilers ahead  **so maybe stop reading now if you haven’t seen the film.

I had no idea prior to watching that Bradley Cooper’s character was an alcoholic and drug addict (come to find out this is the case in all three films). Not only that, but his demons with his father and his brother were hard to watch too. While his ending was ruined for me by a friend, everything leading up to it, especially the scene where he called her ugly and the Grammy speech, were torture to watch. I had a really really hard time being emotional at the end of the movie while she was singing “I’ll Never Love Again.” If anything, I felt anger. I was angry at Cooper’s character for leaving Ally. If she was his absolute, one true love, he should have got clean for her … regardless of what that dweeb manager of hers said. I was so pissed at him for leaving her in the end and honestly, it ruined the movie for me and that’s why I can’t love it as much as the rest of the world.

All in all, see the movie. In fact, see it twice (I think I need to re-watch it myself) and see the Babs version as well as the Judy Garland version. The music is too too good for you not to see it. Bradley Cooper is too too good for you not to see it. And I’ll always love Gaga, she can do no wrong (Can we please talk about Lady Gaga?), so there is the third and final reason to see the film.

Then come find me and let’s discuss!

Can we please talk about Lady Gaga?

So this was Lady Gaga last night…

Then there was me last night…

However I felt more like this …

Last night I heard an angel sing and watched a bad bitch dance her ass off; both entertained the hell out of my husband and I.

Lady Gaga sang all her hits, plus many songs off the Joanne album! She had four different stages and mini-bridges that would drop from the ceiling so she could get from the front of the arena to the near back. She sang EVERYTHING live and sounded AMAZING! She was honest and real and open, speaking about meaning behind her songs. At one point, when she was describing the song “Joanne” and discussing loved ones and lost, the girl next to me started crying. REAL EMOTION WAS SHED AT THIS SHOW FRIENDS! Oh my gosh, and the people watching … !!

However, I’m not here with this post to brag that I got to see Lady Gaga in concert and you didn’t. (Maybe a little.) Mostly, I want to discuss her Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, which I saved to watch until after we went to see her (hence why the doc has been out since September and I’m just now covering it).

Heeeeeeeeere we go (a-yo a-yo ..get it?)!

“All my insecurities are gone, I don’t feel insecure about who am I as a woman. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of what I have.”

“…when they wanted me to be sexy or they wanted me to be pop I always put some fucking absurd spin on it that made me feel like I was still in control …”

“If I’m gonna be sexy at the VMAs singing about the paparazzi I’m gonna do it while cleaning the bathroom and reminding you of what fame did to Marilyn Monroe.”

“I want to do the opposite of what everyone thinks I’m going to do …”

“Everyone thinks I’m going to come out there on a fucking throne in a meat dress with 90 shirtless men and unicorns. Am I right? And then at the end I’m gonna do something shocking that’s gonna freak everybody out. But it’s not even in the neighborhood of what we’re gonna do.”

“Honestly we’ve seen me fucking glamorous for 10 years; it’s fucking boring.”

“I never felt comfortable enough to sing or wear my hair back; I never felt pretty enough or smart enough or a good enough musician. That’s the good part: I didn’t feel good enough, and I do now. Of all the things I deserve, that’s where I know I’m worth something.”

Joanne

Gaga’s Joanne album is one of my all-time favorite records, not favorite Gaga, favorite of ALL time. I love every single song and had no idea a majority of this doc was a behind the scenes of the album’s birth: like, did you know she is the one playing the piano on “A Million Reasons” (while she also drank white wine #mygirl!)? There are also scenes with her and Florence Welch singing their duet from the album (or when Flo teases Gaga about her millions of social media followers!), intimate scenes with her, her dad, and grandmother where she shares her inspiration for not only “Joanne” as a song, but the entire album. Of the album she said, “I’m going to fight like fucking hell for them to love this because it’s fucking loveable!” OMG and the scene when she goes to Wal-Mart to purchase her own album …

Hip Pain

So I knew Gaga had cancelled some shows on her tour this year due to immense pain, but I honestly had no idea what that fully meant. She holds none of it back when sharing it and I legit felt that pain. “I have chased this pain for five years,” she explains. “When I feel the adrenaline from my fans, I can fucking go. But it’s not like I’m not in pain.” The documentary shows Gaga bawling the day she is to sing for Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday due to hip pain, screaming into a pillow while her hip gets adjusted during a Super Bowl rehearsal, getting her makeup done while explaining to a doctor all the meds she has to take for the pain, and finally having a breakdown about possibly not being able to go through childbirth due to hip complications. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more real moment (or moments) from a celebrity.

Super Bowl 51

Humble. Diva. Perfectionist. “Why is there a football game before the Lady Gaga show?” What word would you pick to describe the scenes involving Gaga and SB51? I pick the first and last. Early on you hear her repeating the words”thank you” as being chosen, plus she goes on to discuss the importance of the performance and how she thinks “it can’t get bigger than the Super Bowl.” But, we also see her being a bit demanding during the rehearsals. BECAUSE SHE’S A MOTHER F’ING PERFECTIONIST AND TRUE ARTIST!

“If I pick up the keytar and play the wrong note in front of 100 million people, that’s my fault,” she says. “It doesn’t matter that someone else screwed it up. It’s my name. I know to other people it’s just the lining of a jacket,” she explains. “But for me, it’s the way that the fabric on my outfit interacts with this fabric is going to change the speed of my arm as it enters the sleeve.”

She didn’t disappoint.

Especially after seeing her live, I understand how each movement, breath, and note has to be calculated to make any performance the absolute best it can be. So if Gaga has to become a bit of a diva so the lining of the jacket helps her nail a performance, then gosh darn it FIX THE FREAKING LINING!

Final Thoughts

  • The parts where Gaga discusses her success intermixed with her failed relationships broke my heart; GAGA DESERVES LOVE
  • I was really shocked she smoked so much (just being a singer and all)
  • HOLY GAGA BOOBS at one point –> out by the pool, yeah, they were legit out
  • The slowed down, piano version of “Bad Romance” —— definiton of insanity!
  • SAY IT TO HER FACE MADONNA!
  • “I’m 30; I’m old to them” ugh girl me too!

Lastly…

In the doc, Lady Gaga describes her current style as black tees and jeans, yet worries fans will miss her outlandish style choices. Well this fan doesn’t miss it; this fan loves, adores, looks up to, and is inspired by this stripped down, real, emotional, open Lady Gaga. And I’m with her for years to come!
